How to Start a Fitness Routine

It’s never too late to begin a fitness routine that’s right for you. Here are a few steps that will help you start your very own fitness routine.

Assess your fitness level. Record your baseline fitness scores. This will help you measure your progress throughout your fitness journey. Assess your aerobic and muscular fitness, flexibility, and body composition. You can assess this by recording the following:

  • Pulse rate before and after walking 1 mile.
  • How long it takes to walk 1 mile.
  • Waist circumference.

Create your fitness routine. Consider your fitness goals, as they will help determine what kind of workout routine you need. It’s also important to have a balanced routine that incorporates aerobic and strength training exercising. Once you’ve crafted a fitness routine, have a solid schedule to follow.

Get started. Now that you have planned your fitness routine, you will want to start slowly to avoid any serious strains. As you’re working towards building strength and stamina, you may need to take brakes while exercising. Listen to your body and be flexible. If you’re dizzy, nauseous, or short of breath, stop working out as you may be pushing yourself too hard.

Monitor your progress. Assess your fitness level again after six weeks of committing to an exercise routine. Based on the outcome of the assessment, you may need to make adjustments to your routine. Re-assess your fitness goals or try a new activity if you’re losing motivation or interest in fitness. For example, work out at our tennis court or walk around the paths along the perimeter of the on-site lakes if you prefer exercising outdoors.
